Plan. Prepare. Stay Informed.

Chemical threats typically cause adverse health effects such as burning of mucous membranes, itches, burns, difficulty breathing and death. The following are the recommendation of the Cornwall Office of Emergency Management to have in or add to your emergency kit to help you and your family in the event of a chemical threat.

Items such as:

  • Non-perishable food
  • Water
  • A battery-powered or hand-crank radio
  • Extra flashlights and batteries

Consider adding plastic sheeting, tarps, duct tape and scissors to the kit in order be better prepared for a chemical incident. To save critical time during an emergency, pre-measure and cut the plastic sheeting for each opening. This kit should include:

  • Copies of prescription medications and medical supplies.
  • Bedding and clothing, including sleeping bags and pillows.
  • Copies of important documents: drivers license, Social Security card, proof of residence, insurance policies, wills, deeds, birth and marriage certificates, tax records, etc.
  • Choose an internal room to shelter, preferrably one without windows and on a higher level.
